One Winter's Night, written by John Herman with beautiful illustrations by the husband and wife team of Leo and Diane Dillon. This quiet story parallels the journeys of a lonely cow and a human couple, each trying to find shelter and a safe place to give birth. They have both followed a star, and the two journeys intersect when the couple welcomes the cow into a stable they've found. The Dillons present the cow's story in full-page, blue-toned naturalistic paintings on the right side of each spread while the journey of Mary and Joseph is pictured in monochromatic, sepia-colored pictures resembling woodcuts above the text on the left. A tender and poignant telling in this unique presentation of the Nativity story.
